HKS Architects: Exterior Design of the New Piedmont Atlanta Hospital Tower

Anthony MontaltoMy name is Anthony Montalto and I am the Midwest Design Director for HKS Architects.  I had the extreme honor of leading the Exterior Design of the Piedmont Atlanta Hospital Tower project.  At HKS, we are dedicated to creating architecture that exemplifies our clients’ brand, mission, and vision statements for the work they do and services they provide.

When you think of going to a hospital, the first reaction is typically one of fear. Piedmont is looking to change that by creating a hospital that’s a gateway to its community. Piedmont aims to become a place that inspires community wellness, bringing people together to improve public health.

At a critical time in Piedmont’s history and with a focus on the future, we were able to tie the new vision for the Tower project into the unveiling of “The Piedmont Way.”  This commitment to enhancing the patient experience was a fantastic foundation for us to develop a dramatic new structure at the most public facing edge of the campus. More than just a building, the Piedmont Atlanta Hospital Tower shows Piedmont’s dedication to Atlanta, its residents, visitors, doctors, nurses, staff, and most importantly to the patients that receive their care.  With this critical new addition to the hospital campus, we were able to show Piedmont’s commitment to excellent and leading edge care in healing oriented facilities, continuing neighborhood and commercial growth along the Peachtree corridor, and to community education and engagement through the public amenities, concourses and outdoor spaces.

One of my favorite aspects of the new tower is that we had the opportunity to become a standard in the city and respond to the various scales and architectural quality of the surrounding commercial, residential and healthcare organizations.  Each façade of the tower creates a visual journey linking Piedmont to both a commitment to the future and the rich history of healing and service to its patients.  It has been a truly inspiring journey with the entire team and we look forward to seeing Piedmont’s vision brought to life once the project is complete.
